  • A diamante is a seven line poem in the shape of a diamond.
  • The first and last lines are subjects.
  • The second and third lines describe subject one. The fifth and sixth lines describe subject two.
  • The fourth line is split, with the first half describing subject one and the second half describing subject two.

Brainstorming

SUBJECTS:A subject is what the poem is about.  For our poem, we want two one-word subjects.  They can be synonyms or antonyms.

Next, think of words that show the differences between the two subjects (or how they are connected). Choose two adjectives for each subject, three verbs ending in -ing for each subject, and two nouns related to each subject.

Finally, arrange all these ideas into rows so they form a diamond. One subject goes on line one, followed by the adjectives and verbs that describe it on the next two lines. The second subject goes on line seven, and the verbs and adjectives that describe it go on the two lines above it. The middle line has the nouns about both subjects, first the two about subject one, then the two about subject two.

  1. Choose two subjects.
  2. Write two adjectives to describe each subject.
  3. Write three verbs with -ing about what they do.
  4. Write two nouns related to each subject.
  5. Put all the lines in the shape of a diamond.
